Ingredients

  • 1 bunch broccoli
  • 1 red pepper
  • 1 lb (500 g) top-sirloin steak or stir-fry strips
  • 1/3 cup (75 mL) each hoisin and soy sauces
  • 1 to 11/2 tsp (5 to 7 mL) five-spice powder
  • 2 tsp (10 mL) cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp (15 mL) vegetable oil
  • 8- oz (250- g) pkg sliced button mushrooms, about 4 cups (1 L)
Add to grocery list
Pre-sliced mushrooms and beef strips are the time-saving superstars of this delicious, filling dish. And it's rich in protein and fibre to boot.
  1. Cut stems from broccoli. Peel, then slice into thin rounds. Slice florets into small pieces. Slice pepper into strips. If using steak, cut off excess fat. Then slice meat into thin strips. In a small bowl, stir hoisin with soy, five-spice powder and cornstarch.
  2. Heat oil in a wok or large, wide saucepan set over medium-high. Add beef and stir-fry just until it changes colour, 2 to 3 min. Add mushrooms, broccoli and pepper. Stir-fry until vegetables begin to soften, 2 to 3 min. Stir hoisin mixture and add. Stir constantly until sauce thickens, about 3 min. Best over rice or noodles.

  3. Why isn't sodium listed on the nutrition list?

  4. Totally agree about the sodium! We have to watch our intake of this very carefully, so best to use sodium reducted soy sauce...1/3 of cup is very high. My husband survived a heart attack this year and throughout his rehab this same message was heard over and over. WATCH YOUR SODIUM and READ LABELS.

  5. Make this last night for dinner and everyone (even my husband who doesn't normally like stir fries) loved it! It is very simple and quick to make. I only used about 1/2 tsp of Five Spice Powder and it was just right.
